In 2010, there are over 50 million students in the U.S. and OVER 741 MILLION STUDENTS globally. (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) No matter how many times you Skype, TWEET, Google Hangout or share YouTube videos, there is nothing like a personal, tangible letter directly from your own penpal. This creates personal international connection for a student to get to know their penpal through their eyes and lens about their country, school, cultural, arts, music, etc. No form of technology-based communication can produce the excitement on a students' faces like the arrival of a personal and direct letter from your very own pen pal. HEART-IT program is a quick, fun interaction with real-life lesson in Social Studies, Language Arts, Geography, Cultural Exchange, Music, Arts and much more with a penpal by sharing photos, making E-Collages, eCards and mail out real postcards. Encourages students to write with meaning, to write with a sense of purpose and gain a friend. Easily create projects that classes can share on an individual and class level through photos, emails, e-collages and postcards. Learn about other cultures, practice communication/writing skills, learn foreign languages, start a stamp/coin collection or just make a friend from a far away place. Increase awareness of societies and cultures from around the world through your very own Penpal that provide the opportunity to link classrooms from different local city, state, or country and see their world. This is a great fun learning interaction exchange of sharing one’s culture and love of music, arts, and each other’s world. Friendships make the world a lot Better with HEART-IT! Send a personalized PostCard through the HEART-IT Mobile App.

More about this Hack:
Anonymous Good
Honorable Mention
Anonymous Good is an online tribe where anyone can help make the world a better place. People post and comment on each other's everyday acts of Good, and Anonymous Good helps transform them into Global Acts of Change by getting these acts sponsored to fund amazing initiatives (planting trees, feeding people, digging wells and helping slaves to freedom) THE GOAL The Anonymous Good Website has a ton of great content, but it is slow to load and post. It was designed as a website, but Anonymous Good wants to create a dedicated app to focus the website's features into an easier to use format. OUR PROCESS We were able to interview Peggy, who explained the story behind Anonymous Good and shared her vision of a sleek, easy to use app that could scale to handle increases in traffic and future function updates. Chris listed out the key steps for the team to tackle: Personas User Scenarios User Flows and Task Analysis Features and Functions list Design studio (for sketching) Larry and Chris brainstormed 2 personas, Patrick and Jessica, as candidates who would use Anonymous Good, which led to understanding what would be most important to show on the homepage and the buttons at the bottom of the screen. Meanwhile, Katie went to work on finding what app building technology would be the best fit for our needs, and created several quick prototypes. Mike set up the server and started to build the backend application to run the app. Chris then started to design the wireframes, while Katie and Mike worked together to make sure the app building software was compatible with Mike's architecture. Larry worked with the Mashery Evangelist on understanding the Mashery API network. After seeing all the different API options, Larry suggested USAToday, so that the app would be able to pull in news stories that highlight acts of good from around the world. FUTURE STEPS We're excited to showcase our work to Peggy and the Anonymous Good crew, so that they can take this foundation of work and continue to build upon it. We're honored to have helped them on their way to finishing their app that matches their audacious goal of changing the world through everyday acts of Good.
